As we prepared to return home after an extended trip, we faced a few challenges: outgrown children’s clothes (why do they grow so fast?), items useful only while traveling, souvenirs for family and friends, and deciding what to leave behind for future visits.
As we talked about the logistics I felt the overwhelm creep in. And I realized that if it is overwhelming for me than it’s overwhelming for the kids.
So, I created a visual system for them. We took photos of all their belongings, which they found fun. Then I sorted the pictures into categories – backpack items, carry on items, and things staying behind. All they had to do was check off each picture as the item went into the right bag.
It worked so well! My children enjoyed having the independence without anxiety, and I appreciated not having to micromanage everyone’s packing. In fact, it worked so well that I made a simpler version for when they go to respite or summer camp.
Sometimes the most elegant solutions are also the simplest.
