Simple Strategies: Emotional Wellness

Life with kids – especially those with challenging behaviours – can feel overwhelming. Stress triggers our big emotions, and without a strong emotional foundation, we often find ourselves reacting in ways that we regret. If you are a parent or work with kids who need struggle with their big emotions, you likely find yourself unintentionally escalating situations and then feeling guilty afterward.

The good news? There are simple, effective ways to strengthen your emotional well-being and navigate these moments with more confidence and calm.

A Simple Proactive Strategy: Find a Hobby that Brings You Joy

One powerful way to support emotional wellness is to make time for a favourite hobby. But let’s be real – when we hear “hobby,” we often picture elaborate projects like perfect sourdough loaves or intricate handmade crafts shared on social media. In reality, a hobby doesn’t have to be that complicated or Instagram-worthy. It just needs to be something that brings you joy.

For example:

  • I love to sew. Sometimes I take on big projects, sometimes just quick, funky fidgets.
  • One of my children enjoys writing stories (but keeps them private).
  • Another one enjoys whittling.
  • I worked with someone who had a lovely rock collection that brought her great joy.
  • A friend enjoys painting, although according to her she “paints like a child.”

The key is to find something that helps you feel emotionally positive, no matter how big or small.

A Quick Reactive Strategy: The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Method

When struggles increase or unexpected stress pops up, adding another layer of emotional support can make a huge difference. A simple yet effective practice is mentally checking in with your body and giving yourself grace as you do. One of my favourites is the 5-4-3-2-1 method - with a twist I learned years ago:

5 – Name five things you can see
4 – Name four things you can feel in that moment
3 – Name three things you can hear
2 – Name two things you can smell, and
1 – Name one thing you love about yourself

This practice brings you back to the present, helps regulate your body, and reminds you to offer yourself kindness in difficult moments.

Building Emotional Stability – One Step at a Time

Strategies like therapy can be incredibly beneficial, but small, free tools – like engaging in a hobby or using grounding techniques – are things you can start implementing today.
